For this movie it's enemy it's is the source material. If the film makers had the power to stray away from the book more, but the Tolkien purist wouldn't have it. It might have been okay. As it is this movie feels incomplete and well like watching a hokey videogame (I get a bigger emotional response from playing Final Fantasy 8.
Now I like the books the first book being very boring and uninteresting and the WORST BOOK in the trilogy. In the first book hardly nothing much of interest happens and it's just alot of wandering. It took a friend of mine 4 months to read FOTR but 2 weeks to read the Two Towers. Since I like the second book and third book much better, I'm hoping the film makers can stray from the book and let the purist scream a little, they will be better off. I'm looking forward to the second movie, because I like the second book, the second book is much more character focused, then the first, alot more talking and thicker plot. I think they could have easily cut this down and made it into two movies. Or if they would have focused on the Hobbits and not had the Gandalf disco dancing thing, and redid a couple scenes and cut some stuff out, okay so maybe they should have completely redone it.

Bottomline: Overrated? Big fat YES. I can understand finding this movie very very dull boring and even horrible! It's not the film makers fault as much as it is the source material they are working with.

Wow, this film was horrible. The only thing interesting about it were the mindless drones clapping at the end. "wow, what cool perty colors." It was like an episode of Zena, distinguished only by neato special effects. Enough fly-by shots and close-ups, ya think? Melodramatics at its peak, and to think we have two more of these masterpieces on the way. Can't wait.
